Narcissus ‘Astrid’s Rose Water’ 8W-Y, 2026

A taller plant with a rather pedestrian floret of generally tolerable color and average to slightly larger size. That smells like a rose, all day, every day. That said, it’s a strong grower, somewhat heat tolerant, reasonably good frost tolerance, produces a large truss at maturity and its offsets will send up a second bloom. It is likely a much older variety, given its small corona, narrower petals and thin substance. But oh my, it’s that wafting perfume. For the dilettante who places a high value on fragrance. Though the compound phenethyl acetate appears in numerous Narcissus in small amounts, here it is by far the dominant floral volatile compound. Phenethyl acetate is also the dominant fragrance compound in Drift roses and the camellia ‘High Fragrance’. Slightly deeper planting recommended to encourage larger bulbs. Blooms high winter season, around the latter half of December. Unknown fertility. Collected from an old garden site in the Natchez, Mississippi area.

NOTE: The Sara Van Beck tazetta and paperwhite daffodils are generally not hardy in cold climates with freezing winters. In frost-free climates (zones 8-11) these bulbs may be safely planted outdoors in autumn for late winter flowers.
