A robust, older hybrid florist’s flower, its slightly quirky starry floret form sets it apart; it’s as though not all the wiggle got hybridized out to leave a plain uniformity. The small cup is rather wavy, and the rim occasional dentated or crenelated, lending inspiration for its name. The petals don’t open white but instead are lightly tinged, that whiten with maturity. Though narrower and a bit pointy, the petals slightly reflex giving an interesting arched or rounded feel to the overall truss. Best of all, it has a habit of producing florets with bonus petals. Obviously intended for the cut flower trade, the tall, stout stems hold the truss above the foliage. Mature bulbs produce a somewhat higher floret count than many others, along with secondary stems. As a very large plant, particularly with some maturity, it can overwhelm smaller plants nearby. Thus, it should be planted where it can “live large” the rest of the season unencumbered – and bloom all the more the next season. Collected from an old garden site near Natchez, Mississippi.
