‘Miss Lindsay’ appeared one November day amongst unlabeled bags of rescued paperwhites from north Florida and south Georgia. John Van Beck, gazing at the dwarf plant with its old-fashioned florets, found it so delightful he named it in honor of his recently born first grandchild. For decades, ‘Miss Lindsay’ has reliably bloomed in north Florida in time for the Thanksgiving weekend. A small plant that is slow to bulk up, she’s a tough old bird and rather determined even if a bit plodding. Invariably one petal on a floret will turn at the base, a “queen’s wave,” that gives the florets a sense of movement. The yellow coronas fade to white; the hotter the weather the faster the fade. Likely a very old hybrid, her cheerful countenance is always welcoming.

NOTE: The Sara Van Beck tazetta and paperwhite daffodils are generally not hardy in cold climates with freezing winters. In frost-free climates (zones 8-11) these bulbs may be safely planted outdoors in autumn for late winter flowers.
