Lycoris x squamigera, commonly called surprise lily, magic lily, resurrection lily, and naked ladies, is a naturally occurring hybrid between Lycoris sprengeri and L. longituba, originating in Japan. They are ubiquitous garden staples throughout much of the Midwest and Northeast where they produce robust foliage in early spring that goes completely dormant by early summer, and then, by surprise and if by magic, they produce 24-36" naked stems bearing bluish-pink flowers in mid-late July and August, almost overnight. They require a cold period in winter to flower well, and are not suitable for West Coast, Southwestern, and deep Southern states unless your property is at a high enough elevation to provide a good winter chill.  Note:  This is not the same as Amaryllis belladonna, the belladonna lily, a nearly identical-looking flower (yet very different) originating in South Africa and thriving in Mediterranean and maritime climates (commonly found in coastal Californian and in coastal Pacific Northwestern gardens, for instance). Large, plump bulbs may take a season to settle in before producing spring foliage, and may take a full year before flowering--this is normal. Possibly the most indestructible flower bulb on the planet. Fragrant, too!
